In one of his first major speeches as Energy Secretary, Ed Davey has revealed that the UK emitted a total of 590 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2010, this compares to 573 million tonnes in 2009, a rise of 3.1%.

This will come as bad news to the coalition government as they have already committed the UK to a target of cutting all carbon emissions by 80% by the year 2050.
